If you are a budding fashion designer eager to see your designs on the Style Palace website alongside the likes of Camilla, Hussy or Samantha Wills, then you should enter the V Raw LiveStyle Design Search for your chance to showcase a collection at Melbourne’s LiveStyle Festival in 2010, plus receive $8,000 to help your creations come to life.
The V Raw LiveStyle Design Search will be judged by a panel of experts including Famous magazine’s Fashion and Beauty Director, Sally Nolan. Sally always knew she wanted a career in media and combined it with her love for fashion which was developed from a very early age.
Sally recognises how difficult it can be to break into the fashion industry and hopes the V Raw LiveStyle Design Search will provide one young designer with a launching pad to start their career.
‘I hope it will be an opportunity for their career to skyrocket. There will be so many people at the LiveStyle Festival, including buyers, and it will provide the winner with great exposure.’
As one of three judges of the competition, Sally is looking for designers that show a good blend of innovation and wearability.
‘Australian designers are recognised for having the perfect blend of being innovative, relaxed and wearable. If you can’t wear it, it won’t work and Josh Goot and Kirrily Johnston are great examples of Australian designers who get it right.’
Australian designers have certainly been in the spotlight recently, especially when their designs are being worn by some of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities.
‘Who could forget when Sass & Bide was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex and the City and Samantha Wills accessories have been spotted on a number of celebrities including Eva Mendes, Beyonce and Ashlee Simpson. It is great to see,’ said Sally.
‘Another iconic moment for me was when Abbie Cornish wore the purple Toni Maticevski dress on the red carpet at Cannes. Just stunning.’
But it takes a great deal of hard work to get your creations to the red carpet and Sally’s advice for anyone starting out in the industry is to do as much work experience as possible, find a mentor within the industry and always stay true to your product.
And while Style Palace had Sally on the phone talking about Australian fashion, we couldn’t help but ask what was the first item she ever bought online and it just happened to be a blue Marc Jacobs wallet that she still owns and uses.
‘I buy lots of accessories online and I also do all my Christmas shopping on the internet. It’s a great way to avoid the crowds.’
Seeing as Sally spends her days bringing some of the top celebrity fashion to the pages of Famous, we also asked her which celebrity she thought wore it best.
‘Difficult question but I would have to say Diane Kruger. Besides being beautiful she has an amazing sense of style with a modern edge and she never gets it wrong.’
If you would like to impress Sally Nolan with your sense of style, be sure to enter the V Raw LiveStyle Design Search.
